Larry Moore: League of Ohio Sportsmen/Ohio Wildlife Federation Hunter Educator of the Year
Long-time Buckeye Firearms Assocation volunteer Leader Larry S. Moore has been named the League of Ohio Sportsmen/Ohio Wildlife Federation Hunter Educator of the Year. "It is exciting to be honored for hunter education work and recognized by your peers," Moore says. "There are people in the League who have been teaching for 40 years."

Perfect Storm for Gun Owners: Ohio Presidential Primary edition
My story "Perfect storm for gun owners? McCain, DeWine and Giuliani join forces," was published at BuckeyeFirearms.org only a little more than 24 hours after the outcome of Super Tuesday was known. Hoping to get a pulse on what Ohio gun owners who vote in the Republican primary are planning to do given the dwindling options, I asked for feedback, and promised a follow-up story. The results of my little survey are overwhelmingly clear: The Republican party has lost the trust of the Ohio gun owner.

Presidential candidates need to address the real issues for gun owners
In the pantheon of cringe-worthy attempts to fabricate 2nd amendment bona fides, presidential candidates of the last several years have provided more than their fair share. From the infamous "Small Varmints"-Gate of the early Mitt Romney campaign to Hillary Clinton’s desperate revelation that she too used to be quite the hunter, I find it fascinating that a love of firearms, however phony, has become part of the electoral checklist for every viable presidential candidate.

Guns On Campus: Northern Illinois U: Rule #1: Sue Everybody.
It's time to forget about writing more gun bans, time to quit profiling (it's a stalling tactic for political reasons) and time to litigate. The first order of business for any damaged plaintiff is to sue everybody. This would be all colleges who ban weapons, including those who have seen their students murdered

Editorial: Allow concealed carry
It’s time we allow concealed carry on America’s university campuses. Maybe an armed, well-trained professor might have been able to stop the graduate student who went on a shooting rampage Thursday in a Northern Illinois University lecture hall, killing six and wounded 15 before turning the gun on himself.

Students for Concealed Carry on Campus responds to Brady conspiracy accusations: 'Prove it'
Four months after Peter Hamm, spokesperson for The Brady Campaign, verbally attacked the college-based, grassroots organization Students for Concealed Carry on Campus, telling a Fox News reporter, "You don't like the fact that you can't have a gun on your college campus? Drop out of school," he is stepping up the rhetoric. Not content with encouraging college students to forgo their educations, rather than fight for a cause in which they believe, Mr. Hamm has resorted to baseless conspiracy theories and slander.

New Life Church Pastor Brady Boyd speaks out on church security preparedness
One place where leaders made a conscious choice not to wait until their kids die was New Life Church in Colorado Springs, CO. The story of concealed handgun license-holder and New Life Church member Jeanne Assam's brave actions to stop a murderous rampage killer when he stormed onto the church campus on that December Sunday morning won't soon be forgotten.

LTE: Don't ask gun-permit holders to be police
Dispatch Staff Reporter Randy Ludlow rightly quoted Chief Deputy Steve Martin of the Franklin County Sheriff's Office that there had been no incidents involving concealed-carry license holders during the first four years under the law. But then Ludlow added, "On the other hand, neither does Martin recall any incidents locally in which a concealed-carry permit holder prevented a crime or captured a criminal."

UC Crime Update

February 26, 2008

To: UC Community

From: Eugene R. Ferrara
Director of Public Safety/Police Chief

The University of Cincinnati Police have been advised of an assault that occurred on Calhoun Street near West Clifton. This incident happened at approximately 3:30 AM on Sunday morning, February 24, 2008. The complainant states that while he was walking across Calhoun St. a vehicle pulled along side of him and engaged him in conversation. One occupant of the vehicle suddenly jumped out of the vehicle and punched the complainant in the face. The suspect returned to the vehicle and it fled west on Calhoun and turned north onto Clifton Ave. The complainant did not get a license number but the vehicle is described as a bright orange Pontiac Firebird, believed to be of the 1980's vintage, with 20" wheels.

If you have any information concerning this incident please contact the Cincinnati Police at 352-3578, UC Police at 556-1111 or Crime Stoppers at 352-3040. The UC Police also have a "tip" line to receive information about criminal activity. That number is 556-COPS (2677).

The University Police are concerned about safety on and around UC campuses and continue to work with the Cincinnati Police Department, Student Government and community groups to reduce criminal activity. While these alerts indicate the need for continuous efforts, the overall trend is decreasing crime both on and off campus.

Before NIU shooting, the signs were there

The media always makes it seem like a perfectly normal person snaps whenever a mass shooting happens... that is, until they actually do some research.

It turns out the shooter was mentally disturbed, very similar to the Virginia shooting. Not that it took a great deal of imagination to figure out that a mass killer has mental issues...

There's always more to the story than the "normal kid goes crazy because he gets a gun" template that the media likes to spin.

Buckeye Firearms Association 2008 Primary Endorsements
Due to the limited number of people who vote in primary elections, each vote counts as a greater percentage of the total votes cast. In past years strong pro-gun candidates have lost by as few as 10 votes. Can there be any doubt that there were at least 10 pro-gun voters in those districts who stayed home because it was "only a primary"?

HB478: Tax Relief and Gun Rights Rolled Into One
Ohio gun owners could get some tax relief to go along with their concealed handgun license if a recently introduced bill in the Ohio House of Representatives is passed. HB478, sponsored by State Representative Dan Dodd (D-Hebron), would "allow a refundable tax credit against the personal income tax for concealed-carry license fees." Every dollar you pay out for your license would be reimbursed by the state at tax time.

Pro-Gun Punditry: Wednesday's Buckeye State Roundabout
There are more stories pertaining to our gun rights in Ohio then we can possibly draw attention to with individual daily commentary. But they are all worthy of mention. What follows is our review of headlines from around the state though a pro-gun rights lens.

Barack Obama and gun rights: When is "Support" Not Support?
Barak Obama continues his attempt to be all things to all people by claiming in an Associated Press interview that he supports the individual right to bear firearms. The interview was conducted in the immediate aftermath of the Northern Illinois shootings.

Denial killed NIU students; Denial is alive and well on Ohio campuses
Following the latest multiple-victim public shooting on the Northern Illinois University campus, radio talk-show host Rush Limbaugh focused his national audience on the fact that these shootings keep occurring in what he calls "these wonderful, Utopian, marvelous little college campi that is a gun-free zone."

Time to close the “Public Safety Loophole”
In April 2007 we saw the worst school shooting in American history. Students were lined up against the wall and shot to death like cattle at Virginia Tech. These scholars stood meekly and could do nothing to fight back, as school policy had disarmed them and for obeying this idiotic rule they died.

Guns On Campus: The Debate continues.. and continues and continues . . .
In this country, it is a liberty truth and patriotic truth that officials do not have the authority to allow or disallow anything when it comes to guns. This is the part officials and anti-gun nuts won't accept and somehow try to work around, from any individual ban to 20,000 gun laws: you do not have the authority to allow or disallow guns, much less how a citizen may carry, what they carry and where they carry.

Lt. Col Dave Grossman's Bullet-Proofing the Mind - A MUST for every concealed-carrier
The story of concealed handgun license-holder Jeanne Assam's brave actions to stop a murderous rampage killer in Colorado Springs, Colorado's New Life Church won't soon be forgotten. But most Americans are totally unaware of what happened with the two other concealed handgun license-holders who confronted the killer that day.

Al Gore's Current TV takes on Knob Creek Machine Gun Shoot
Recently, Buckeye Firearms Association was contacted by Evan B. Stone, Executive Director for Current TV, the media company led by former U.S. Vice President [and anti-gun extremist] Al Gore, and [equally anti-gun] businessman Joel Hyatt. We were asked to review a short documentary on "The Machine Gun Shootout" in Kentucky. We did take a look, and now you can too.

Who is attacking the Second Amendment in the D.C. gun case, and what can you do about it?
At some point in your day, you, like me, probably wonder “Have I done all I can do to be a pain in the hind end of those who oppose my gun rights?” The answer, of course, is “no.” Fortunately, it is easy to take some immediate and long term actions to irritate those opposed to your rights. Most steps are as simple as “vendor selection” decisions you make daily.

What about allowing people to protect themselves by being armed?

Whenever you see coverage of a mass shooting that ignores simple facts - like the campus at NIU was a "gun-free" zone, and therefore it was like shooting fish in a barrel - remember to ask yourself WHY they aren't considering the option of letting people defend themselves.

This line of thinking doesn't even occur to anti-gun folks. The only solution, in their closed minds, is to limit access to guns. They don't even consider that this has been proven that it does not work in every place it has been tried (example - Illinois is one of only two states without a CCW law, and in Chicago, IL's biggest city, guns are essentially illegal).

Archetypal coverage of a mass shooting

The coverage of the most recent tragedy is following the typical media anti-gun template - first, he was a perfect student and human being who, it appears just snapped (suggesting that the guns may have caused the rampage, not the shooter).

Next, it turns out he's on medication (though hasn't been taking it) and had planned the shooting in advance.

Finally, there will be a call for stricter gun control to prevent such tragedies (often by foreigners who have already lost their gun rights, though their crime has typically increased, as in the case of Australia).

A few are straying away from the template, however. Surprisingly, some are coming to the conclusion concealed carry advocates have long advanced - that this could have been avoided if only someone was legally allowed to use a gun in self-defense.

Nearly all mass shootings are perpetrated by people with a troubled background and are almost always carried out in gun-free zones (a place of little resistance).

Even more oddly, Barack Obama used the situation as a way to show he believes in the right to bear arms, though his voting record tells a very different story.

Another gun-free campus, another tragedy

Second March 1-Day CHL scheduled

Our March 15 1-day CHL filled up so fast, we figured it'd only be fair to offer a second.

So we'll hold a second 1-day CHL (12 hours, 8am- 8pm) on March 22. Sign up before it's full!

It's known as the "cult of personality"

One of the front-runners for the Dem nomination is causing some to swoon with his charismatic ways. There have been many leaders who are elected using this technique, even if their actual beliefs aren't clear to voters.

A warning to Ohioans voting in the upcoming March 4 primary - no candidates are talking guns, though all have strong opinions. These opinions WILL effect you in the coming years, especially with a Congressional leadership that is very anti-gun.

Check out this "cult of personality's" views views on gun control here.

Other leading candidates and their views: H. Clinton, J. McCain and M. Huckabee.

Mass shootings happen where guns are FORBIDDEN

If we've learned anything from the history of concealed carry, it's that massive shootings (or killings in general) tend to only happen in places where law-abiding citizens are disarmed.

Case in point, the Ohio school stabbing/shooting this week and the city council meeting in Missouri where six died. In Missouri, like Ohio, it is illegal to carry concealed into a school or government building.

The result? Bad guys know the good guys are helpless, and innocent people die.

I'm not sure what sort of infantile logic tells anti-gunners that if you put up a sign you'll keep guns out. Bad guys don't care about signs, or the law, and they almost never have a concealed carry license. Anti-gun signs are an invitation for trouble, not a means to avoid it.

Man stabs wife in "gun-free" Ohio school zone

Senate Juidiciary meeting on Castle Doctrine

Senate Judiciary – Criminal Justice Committee Intends to Reschedule Hearing on Ohio’s “Castle Doctrine” Legislation!
Please Contact the Senate Judiciary Committee and Urge Them to Support SB184! The Senate Judiciary – Criminal Justice Committee has taken Senate Bill 184, Ohio’s “Castle Doctrine,” off of the agenda for its Wednesday, February 6 meeting due to scheduling conflicts with Governor Ted Strickland’s (D) State of the State address. The Senate committee has announced its intent to reschedule a hearing.

SB 184, sponsored by State Senator Steve Buehrer (R-1), would help restore the fundamental right of self-defense. This legislation would restore the right of individuals to respond with force in defense of their lives and family, and immunize the victim from civil lawsuits by criminals or the criminal’s family.

Glock 36 is fixed!

Turns our our Glock 36 problem (slide locking back early) was one of our own making - the trigger assembly wasn't properly installed!

We have to credit Brandon's wife for help on the fix. It seems that us guys aren't quite as careful with directions as the ladies...

So our Glock 36 is back up and running for classes! Long live the 45ACP mini hand-cannon!
