How do I sight in my AR scope?

Had a question this week from a student who picked up a new Bushmaster AR15, threw a scope on it, and isn't sure how to sight in the scope, sometimes called zeroing. Here's the process.

What you need:
- Your gun
- 20-30 rounds of ammo
- A set of binoculars or spotting scope
- Some sand bags to rest the front of the rifle/shotgun on (or a gun rest like a Lead Sled if you have it)
- A laser bore-sighter if you can't see through the bolt (see 1 below)
- A few targets with a clear bullseye
- A range with a 25 yard and 100 yard distance

1- Bore-sight the gun. Some gun shops will do this for you when you buy a scope. In this case, skip to 2. If not, here's how you do it.

If you have a bolt that pulls out where you can see from the back of the gun down the barrel, pull the bolt out. Put the gun in a rest, look through the back of the barrel and down range at a target at 25 yards. Put the bullseye dead-center in the bore, then adjust your scope so the crosshairs of the scope are on the center. This works especially well with a bolt-action rifle, like a Remington 700. If you can't see through the back of your gun out the bore of the barrel, buy a laser bore sighting kit. They're only about $30 and let you get the barrel lined up to the scope. Pop the laser in the barrel and put the crosshairs on the laser dot at 30 yards.

Bore sighting is an important first step. It'll save you a lot of ammo and frustration so you can start hitting the paper right away.

2- Start shooting. With the gun securely rested on the bench, load a round, put the crosshairs on the bullseye at 25 yards, and slowly pull the trigger.

Here's the important trick. With the gun steady and secure, aim the crosshairs at the bullseye and adjust the scope (holding the gun very steady) so the crosshairs move from the bullseye to the hole.

Now shoot again. You should be nearly on the bullseye. If not, try again. Remember, not holding the gun steady will goof up this process something horrible.

Also, take breaks when the barrel starts to get hot. A hot barrel will shoot differently than a cold barrel, and in most cases you want the gun sighted in so it'll get the shot right when the barrel is cold.

3- Move out to 100 yards. Take a shot at 100 yards, and point crosshairs at the bullseye then adjust to the hole. Aim at the bullseye, and repeat this process until you're dialed in. That's it. Easy, eh?

A few key things to remember:

- Bore-sighting your gun first will save you a lot of time and ammo.

- Make sure you hold the gun very steady, squeeze the trigger very slowly, and take your time. Most guns shoot much more accurately than the shooter, so take your time so you don't goof the shot and blame it on the gun.

- Shoot a few rounds to confirm you're on-target.

- It's a good idea to re-zero every few months, especially if the gun was bouncing around in a case or in the safe a long time.

When you read a story like this one, you have to wonder why some people insist that calling the police is a solid alternative to owning a gun in the home for self-protection.

The police aren't a personal bodyguard service. They can't be everywhere at every moment, just waiting for you or your family to be in danger.

Take it upon yourself to protect your family. Don't be stupid about it--lock up your guns, practice the 3 rules (safe direction, finger off trigger, unloaded until you're ready to use it), and hit the range a few times a year to stay sharp.

Relying on the police might just get you killed, like it did for this poor family.

Neighbors cheer Ohio CHL-holder for fighting back during attempted robbery

Cincinnati's CBS affiliate, WKRC, is reporting that "a neighborhood beaten down by crime in the last two weeks is cheering one of its own for fighting back."

Three masked men tried to rob a man on Rosemont Avenue in West Price Hill Monday night. But the trio didn't know their victim had a concealed carry permit- and was prepared to shoot.

Troy Hammond and Tremaine Hughes are charged with aggravated armed robbery. Officers say they were both shot at during the incident -- but they are not the real victims.

Police say Hammond, Hughes, and another man jumped the victim, whose name has not been released. The victim has a concealed carry permit -- and fired a shot, hitting one suspect. That suspect is still in the hospital.

How young is too young?

A question we often get: how young is too young to take my son/daughter shooting?

A good rule of thumb is when your kid understands the difference between life and death. Shooting is serious stuff, and you want to be sure your child understands that not taking the rules seriously could result in irreversible consequences.

Most kids have a clear understanding of life and death by 7 or 8 years old. A good first step is a clear respect for common household items that have some inherent danger, like the lawn mower, weed wacker, kitchen knives, etc. Another is the ability to list and explain the importance of the three safety rules (safe direction, finger off the trigger, unloaded until you're ready to shoot).

Taking the mystery out of firearms and teaching children to respect guns is important at an early age, but starting too soon could result in an irrational fear of guns or an accident.

For kids not quite ready to head to the range, we highly recommend the NRA's Eddie Eagle youth safety program. We also offer Youth training classes, which will show you how to teach your child. Details at CinciCCW.com.

Don't listen to the 'where they came from' twisted logic

When someone uses a car as a runaway vehicle in a crime, does the media run out and see where they bought the car? Or when a man beats another with a bat, do they call Louisville Slugger or the sporting goods store for comment? Of course not. So why do people get all twisted in knots about where a legally acquired gun came from?

The fact is bad guys can get a hold of guns, even in countries like Russia, England and Mexico where they're illegal. Sure, we should work to keep guns out of the criminal's hands, but making such a big deal out of the origin of a gun is foolish. It's the crime that matters. Law enforcement should be working to put bad guys in jail for the illegal acts they commit, not the legal ones.

And would have the source of the gun (or car or bat) stopped the crime? No, the bad guy would have just found another source.

So next time you hear the media panting about where someone got the gun, dismiss it. Remind people it's the crime that's important, not the means.

Homeland Security officers have lost 200 guns

USA Today is reporting that the Dept. of Homeland Security has reported nearly 200 lost guns from its officers.

This is important for anyone who carries-- eventually, your gun does become like your cell phone, keys, or anything else you might lose on a regular basis. You must treat your gun with respect, always know where it is, and lock it up when it's not on your person.

Sounds crazy, but lost guns happen. And you don't want your gun to end up in the wrong hands.

Gun With Wireless Arming Signal Goes On Sale Soon

Improving safety and technology is nearly always a good thing, but keep in mind the very specific tasks for a gun. They must work, every time and under nearly any condition, or you could be killed.

This type of tech must be vetted to the same standards of every other gun -- bury it, run it over with a car, throw it in water, etc. I don't know about you, but I certainly won't trust my life to something that could get as easily goofed up as a bluetooth headset or garage door opener. Failed batteries or loose circuits could get good guys killed, so take all these advancements with a grain of salt.

Even more important, let everyone know about the potential limitations (and consequences) of these technologies. Some local governments have already passed laws requiring all guns to be 'smart' as soon as the technology is available. We must push that this not be the case until all smart guns are reliable as regular guns, and make sure older guns don't get banned in the process.

In the wake of a disaster, environmental or otherwise, there is often chaos. Today's example is in Haiti, where gangs are fighting in the streets for food.

This is yet another reason why self-defense and gun-rights are critical. After the LA earthquakes, OJ trial, the floods in New Orleans, and countless other US-disasters we experienced similar disorder. The government can't and won't protect you when order is truly lost. It is your responsibility to protect yourself. And time and time again, it's been proven that a gun is the best way to do just that.

So remember when anti-gun folks say "why do you need a rifle in the city--there's no hunting," that this issue is much bigger than hunting.

Will we survive the cold at the range?

If you've got a class coming up, you're probably a bit concerned about the frigid weather we've been having. Do we shoot outside? is a big question. Yes, we do, but there are good reasons.

First, most indoor gun ranges are not well heated due to ventilation requirements (the big range in Sharonville included). So it's just as cold inside as it is out, even at most indoor ranges.

Second, indoor ranges are much louder and more cramped than outdoor, making it very difficult to hold a class indoors. Especially for new shooters.

And finally, indoor ranges, especially older ranges, force you to breathe in pollutants as you shoot, including lead. We'd rather not do that, so we prefer to shoot outside for the health of our instructors and students.

Nothing wrong with going to an indoor range-- we go every now and then-- but an outdoor range tends to be better for classes and better for your health, and is typically just as cold as the indoor version.

So bundle up, jump in your car if you get too cold, and we'll get the fire pit and propane heaters cranked up so we can all survive the outing!

We often get the question: what are the best carry guns? Depends on who you ask, how you carry, and your tolerance for recoil, but it's hard to go wrong with snub-nose revolver. Utterly reliable and easy to use, a 357 magnum gives you the option of shooting 38sp or 357's, and it'll work every time you pull the trigger. Just watch out for the ultra-lights or guns with very short grips--this makes it harder to hit what you're aiming at and uncomfortable for many to shoot.

A recent article in USA Today proclaimed "Criminals are packing more heat," leading you to believe that lax gun laws are allowing criminals to use more "assault weapons" and bigger calibers.

BS. Total BS. You can see it just by reading the stats they point out.

First, they talk about Chicago, and police claiming more assault weapons are being used. Guns of every type, especially assault weapons and handguns, are illegal in Chicago. So the ban there isn't working.

Second, they talk about the "quality of weapons" are getting better. Criminals are using 9mm and 40 S&W's instead of, I don't know, maybe 22's. In the last two decades these two calibers have been standardized, and the guns have gotten smaller (thanks to a mag-capacity limit law that has since gone away). So of course guns will tend to go to these calibers--that's like saying the number of Camry's stolen has gone up since sales of Camry's have increased. It's simple logic.

Finally, they point out that a lot of "automatic weapons" are being seized. Automatic weapons are illegal without an extreme amount of paperwork, so banning machine guns hasn't worked either.

In summary, this whole article is meant to scare people into thinking that criminals are walking around with machine guns, and if we don't do something about it (like pass an Assault Weapons Ban) we're all going to be gunned down in the streets. What they ignore is the fact that in all the cases they list there's either a law already on the books being violated (that's not stopping the criminal) or simple, unfixable via law logic as to why the increase exists.

Keep an eye out for efforts like this to increase into 2010, as Congress will try to push another ineffective and restrictive ban on gun owners.

After a full week of wearing a new Desantis Ankle Rig, purchased at the Ft Worth, TX Cabelas (or the Disney Land for Shooters as I call it), I can easily say this holster rocks. It's easy to wear, comfortable, and stays put. I highly recommend for anyone who needs to tuck their shirt in, needs to carry seriously concealed, and wears long pants.

Sure, access to your gun suffers in any ankle rig, but I would argue that if you have to tuck your shirt in this is the easiest, most comfortable way to have a carry gun close at hand. And if you drive a lot or sit at a desk all day, this is much more comfortable than waist-band carry and allows you to actually access your gun faster (IWB holsters tend to be hard to access when sitting).

Some unlucky shooter at the Bass Pro shops in Dallas, TX managed to shoot the roof of their indoor gun range, blowing through the range's sprinkler system. I happened to walk in while a fire engine was waiting outside to disable the sprinkler system, and the Bass Pro maintenance crew was busy cleaning up all the water.

In fact, the box of the gun I purchased, which was stored in the basement of Bass Pro, was wet due to the flooding that ensued.

Remember your rules, folks. 1) Safe direction, 2) Finger off the trigger (this is where he broke the rule), and 3) Keep the gun unloaded until you're ready to use it.

Follow these three rules and no one, including any harmless sprinklers at Bass Pro, gets hurt.

We love 1911's, as most gun guys do. Taurus has been a descent discount-firearms brand for us, especially descent for their revolvers, so we decided to give their 1911 a try for class use.

We've shot them before, and they live up to modern 1911's wonderful-ness. We'll see how this gun holds up and report back.

Tragic shooting is another example of a "gun-free" zone incident

Believe it or not, most soldiers are not allowed to carry on base. It appears MPs acted quickly and stopped the shooter, but still, a dozen soldiers lost their lives and many more were injured.

No idea if allowing soldiers/civilians to carry on base could have reduced the carnage, but it is clear that many were left defenseless against a crazed attacker.

You don't need to carry, you're in a public place, right? WRONG.

There's a debate brewing over whether witnesses to a serious crime must report the crime to police. What's stirring this up is a gang-rape of 15-yr old girl at a school function, where 20+ people saw what was happening and didn't report it.

The lesson to media? We should question whether you have to call the police in such a situation. The lesson for us? Protect yourself-- you can't rely on others to help. Even when it's obvious that a serious, even violent crime is being committed.

Police: 70 year-old woman with concealed handgun license saved lives by shooting robbery suspect

Columbus news media are quoting police as saying a woman who shot an armed robber when he entered her hotel room with a gun may have saved the lives of her friends.

The incident happened at about 9:15 p.m. at the Continent Inn Motel at 6225 Zumstein Dr.

The door was standing open on a motel room. The suspect walked into the room, showed a firearm and started to rob several people who were in town for the Quarter Horse Congress, CPD said.

A 70-year-old woman pulled out a handgun and shot the robbery suspect, investigators said.

The suspect fled to the parking lot.

Columbus police arrived on the scene at about 9:20 and found the suspect in the lot. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the woman might have saved the lives of the people with her in the room.

The heroic robbery victim, who the Columbus Dispatch is reporting is an Ohio concealed handgun license-holder, was interviewed and released from custody, Police say she won't face charges, because the shooting is being considered an act of self-defense.

Under the Ohio's Castle Doctrine law, if someone unlawfully enters an occupied home or temporary habitation (such as this woman's hotel room), or occupied car, citizens have an initial presumption that they may act in self defense, and will not be second-guessed by the State.

If there's a bump in the night...

We often get the question--what do you have in case you think someone's in your house at night?

I have a locking box by the bed that has a Springfield XD 40 S&W and a Surefire LED flashlight. Plus my wife's purse is in the bedroom, which has her car and housekey in it, and both our cell phones are charging on the dresser.

Here's why:
- the Springfield is a high-capacity, easy to shoot handgun that I'm very comfortable with. I'm usually a 45-guy, but my wife isn't. Which means if she'd have to use it I want the gun to be a caliber she can shoot. Plus I don't feel under-armed with a 40--it's a great bullet, especially when you put good hollow-points in it. Plus there's a second 9mm locked in our closet in case I need to go investigate and leave her in the bedroom or with the kids.

- the Surefire, while very expensive ($90-ish), is the brightest, toughest, easiest to use and most compact tactical flashlight I've ever seen. It's an LED, which means the batteries last a long time, and it's built for the worst of situations. It's instant-on button is made for sweeping hostile environments--turn it on with just a bit of pressure of your thumb (with it in your hand like a baton, flashlight side down) and you can easily search a space without giving away where you are. Just let go and the light goes off. Plus it's bright as hell and light-weight.

- keys for two reasons. First, using the 'panic' button on the car keys is a great way to scare the be-Jesus out of someone in the house, and second because if we're trapped upstairs with a bad guy downstairs and cops outside I want to be able to throw my keys down so the Police don't have to kick in a door.

- cell phones because you can't cut a cell line and it's a portable connection to 911, which is always the first step if you know someone's broken in.

Two weeks with an ankle holster--and I'm a convert

I'm a convert. While disparaging ankle holsters for nearly 6 years, I never really tried one for any length of time. Access, comfort, I had a lot of excuses. But my only exposure had been 15 minutes of ankle-holster time.

Now that I've put a Bianchi ankle holster through the paces, I can easily say that this is a viable option for carry, especially for those who tuck in their shirts.

Yes, it'll take a while to get a hold of your gun. Longer than some situations might allow, but when there's no other easy way to carry or you're dressed in a way where inside-the-pants or belt holsters just don't work, an ankle holster is a great option.

I especially like the ability to drive in comfort (and with easy access to the gun).

Some tips:

Get a holster that fits your gun. Strapping a big chunk of steel and material to your leg isn't comfortable unless everything works well together.
Experiment with which gun fits best in the holster. I found small revolvers worked much better than autos, mostly because the grips were shorter and didn't stick out.
Having an ankle holster on takes some getting used to. Don't give up quickly--I made that mistake years ago. Give it a couple of days. Maybe start by just wearing the holster by itself for a few days. Get used to the feel before you go full-out and carry.
Adjustments make a huge difference. Sometimes you'll have to scoot the holster up, down, and around your leg to find the perfect fit.
Tight is good--the more snug I have the holster the less it feels like it's there. Not saying you should tourniquet yourself, but make sure the holster allows for a tight fit. Any looseness can cause the gun to flop around, which is very uncomfortable.
When necessary, go to the bathroom and make any adjustments. Once in a while, like any holster, things get out of whack. A trip to the restroom gives you an opportunity for a fix. Don't let something nag you or look weird--fix it.

I'll be regularly carrying in this fashion from now out. Let us know your experiences with your ankle holster (or any other holster) and we'll share them.

Once in a while, a dumbass slips through the cracks. 99.9% of CHL holders are good folks (that's an actual stat - less than 0.1% of CHL holders are convicted of a crime with a gun, that's 30x better than the average citizen). Here we appear to have a moron.

Let's hope people learn from this. You CANNOT brandish a firearm. Not as a joke, not as a threat, not for ANY REASON WHATSOEVER. You have a concealed weapon to protect yourself if you're attacked. No other reason. Ever.

One note, however. In the 5+ years since Ohio passed concealed carry this is the FIRST incident we've ever heard of where a CHL holder brandished a firearm. And it appears it was not in violence, probably a stupid (very stupid) joke from a guy with too much testosterone.

Given the rarity of this situation, let's hope the anti-gunners, always looking for a reason to over-react, don't take this as fodder to do things that hurt us all.

History channel calls gun sales a sign of Nazism coming back

Has the History Channel decided to throw in the towel with facts, and instead pander to BS and frenzy?

In tonight's episode of "Nostradamus Effect" (clearly not the most intelligent programming choice for the channel), the History Channel's narrator said the following:

"Wide-spread extremest beliefs, both in America and off its shores, growing sales of guns and other weapons, and hate crimes increasing every year around the world, all suggest the prophesy of a new Reich is becoming fulfilled."

HUH? Talk about playing fast-and-loose with the facts. Gun sales are up and violent crime is DOWN. In fact, gun sales have been increasing for 30+ years in the U.S. What about the "growing hate crimes" overseas, where guns are illegal? Again, no mention. It seems as though some zealous producer just wanted to tie guns to Nazism for the heck of it...

How does fascism tie to gun sales? No connection is given, but they do show a clip of a gun shop and gun range.

And finally, racism is growing? Ever heard of the 40s, 50s and 60s? Jim Crow laws? Lynchings? A Ku Klux Klan that used to be a dominant force in the US? Maybe "hate crimes" (what the hell kind of violent crime isn't "hateful"?) increase year-over-year for a few in a row, but they're seriously saying things are worse than they were?

Let's not let the History Channel, once a bastion of serious programming (often about the history of firearms) slide down this slippery slope...

Report 1: 2 days into the ankle holster

Using a standard strap-style ankle holster and my Rossi 357-magnum, I'm finding the ankle holster much easier than I first suspected. It took a bit of playing-around to figure out the alignment on my leg, especially figuring out where the pointy-parts can go and not cause pain.

On top of rotating the holster to find placement, the other major question is what gun fits well. A long handle doesn't work well--it pokes out and is clearly visible. A snub revlover seems to fit the bill nicely, and I have two that seem to fit the best. My first try was with a Glock 36-- an excellent inside-the-waistband gun. But it's longer grip (though still short) didn't jive well with the ankle configuration.

First, a 38-special Taurus snubbie. It's a 5-shot, wood-handled guy. Not one of the ultra-light-weights, as those tend to be uncomfortable to shoot, but a standard M85-style gun (a bit older, though). It works well, and I carried it Tuesday without issue.

On Wednesday I decided to try my Rossi 357-magnum. It's a bit bigger, a bit-heavier, and holds an extra shot. This also fits well, and with some additional adjusting, was very comfortable.

While I'm finding it does take some getting-used-to to have the extra weight on your leg, and access doesn't appear to be flawless (you'll have to pull your pants leg up to access the gun), cocealablity with boot-cut jeans is excellent. And it's kind of nice to not have the inside-the-waistband style holster when driving.

Will report back more later. To my surprise, I'm liking the ankle holster...

Coverage of AZ's bar-carry rule has been slanted

Are you shocked? 3/4 of this article is dedicated to bar owners scared they'll get hurt.

I can't tell you how many students come through our class that have to work near/in bars, and wish they had the right to self defense. Does more violence happen in bars than elsewhere? Yes. Why? Because people get drunk and stupid. Does that mean someone NOT drinking should be left defenseless against drunk attackers? Heck no.

The logic is seriously flawed of bar owners in Arizona who post anti-gun signs. If someone's going to get drunk and shoot someone, they aren't going to pay attention to a sign (how often do we hear about violence in/just outside of bars in states where guns are forbidden?).

I'd rather have the band member, wrapping his gig at 2am and loading thousands of dollars of equipment in his car, able to defend himself. Or the waitress, getting off in the middle of the night after being heckled by drunk customers, able to defend herself from being attacked.

Weapons Disablity, a real story

My age is 48, and I have only owned one gun, an old Stevens double barrel 12 gauge that my dad gave me. In late march I completed a conceal and carry class. Next step is to purchase a hand gun. I went to the recommended store since they seemed to have the best prices for the one I wanted. After going through the demonstration and what comes with it, I filled out my background check. After a few minutes the store owner came back and said I was denied the purchase by the NICS check and gave me some information if I wanted to file an appeal. He didn’t seem to be too alarmed by this and informed me that he had seen Policemen and people with conceal and carry permits get denied. If you call NICS, they will not tell you why you were denied or anything about your record. I had a couple of small misdemeanors in the distant past so I figured there was something there that I did wrong. So, I filed my appeal, which required me to send my fingerprints so they can compare with the FBI records. In the mean time, I started doing research on this issue. It turns out that I had a “weapons disability” according to Ohio revised code 2923.13 - http://codes.ohio.gov/orc/2923.13

In short, if you have a conviction of a felony violence offense, mentally ill, drug dependent, or have ANY conviction of a “drug of abuse”, then it is a third degree felony to “knowingly acquire, have, carry, or use any firearm or dangerous ordnance” In other words, you can’t touch a gun.

26 years prior, I had a misdemeanor drug conviction in the state of Kentucky. So, time to get it expunged. I sent for my record in Kentucky and it came back clean. After more research, I found that Kentucky passed a law to get rid of old misdemeanors on the books and also got rid of the electronic records. So it turns out that even though I didn’t have a record in Kentucky anymore, the FBI still knew about it. So I contacted a lawyer in Kentucky and he said he would do the expungment for $500. Bummer, that is the cost of the gun I wanted. So I sat and pondered all of this. A little over 4 months go by and I get my appeal back from NICS. It stated that I was indeed the person with the record, but after further research, I was approved to purchase one firearm from the exact dealer where I was denied. Apparently they must have run my record again in Kentucky and saw it was now clean. Also, when I received my appeal back, it had a copy of my FBI record. I figured the only way to keep this denial thing from happening again was to get this expunged because NICS keeps no records. They are required to destroy records of a background check within 24 hours. This is a good thing; otherwise it would be gun registration by the federal government. I contacted the county courthouse where I was convicted in Kentucky and they said I could file for expungment for $100 and it didn’t require a lawyer, but I had to provide them with the FBI record that was less than 30 days old so they knew what to send to the state police. The FBI will only expunge a record when told to by the state police. So, now I got that done. Went to get the gun and the shop owner had only seen an appeal approval certificate one other time. I guess not too many people win their appeal. He re-ran my check and my “appeal recheck” came back “Delayed”. I called the NICS the next day to see what was up and told them I am getting tired of the embarrassment of being turned down, and the woman said to hold tight for a few more days. But, after two days it was finally approved. So, if I didn’t get my expungement done, I would most likely have to go through this every time I wanted to purchase a firearm from a dealer. So my next move is to get a CCW license. More on that if there is a problem.

Why am I writing this story? Because I want to share my experience with others that have questions when and if they get denied. Ohio’s weapons disability law is pretty crappy. There is no room for a second chance and I have seen on the web that some states don’t allow expungement at all. So those people only have one other option. There is a provision in the Ohio law where you can get relief from the disability, but it appears that it could be expensive. http://codes.ohio.gov/orc/2923.14 I wrote my local Ohio congressman, he called me back when I wasn’t home and I haven’t tried to get in touch with him again. I want to know why isn’t there some kind of statute of limitations on how long ago the drug offense was. In the end, I only have myself to blame for my past mistakes. This is something everyone should stress to their children. The FBI never forgets, so stay out of trouble so you can keep your rights of freedom and to bear arms.

Gun ownership, concealed carry at highest levels in history. And violent crime drops. Again.

The myth that thick walls and security cameras will protect you is one often put forth by large institutions wishing to ignore a person's request to have a weapon for personal defense.

This has been illustrated, yet again, on the gun-free campus of Yale. This is an affluent, "highly secured" area. Yet a young woman, days before her wedding, was apparently brutally killed and her body hidden, only to be found several days later.

She was worried about her safety before she died, even taking the typical, recommended precautions (travel in groups, take public transportation, etc.). They didn't save her.

Thick walls and cameras may help deter an attack, but as it's happening, they do nothing. When a bad guy attacks, sometimes the only defense is a weapon. When will universities and corporations who forbid carry learn this?

Newspaper once editorialized in favor of preempting local gun laws

Last week, upon the occasion of the injury of two Columbus officers by a marijuana-growing suspect who fired on them with a semi-automatic AK-47 rifle, gun ban extremists quickly ran out to dance in the officers' blood.

These groups, including the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, the Freedom States Alliance, and the Ohio Coalition Against Gun Violence, sought to sell the line that the incident had occurred because the Ohio General Assembly acted in late 2006 (via HB347) to preempt local gun control laws, including so-called "assault weapons" bans in Columbus and Cleveland.

Over the weekend, the gun banners' accomplices on the Cleveland Plain Dealer editorial board dutifully took the gun control groups' ball and ran with it, in an editorial entitled "Ohio should get its cities to make and enforce anti-gun laws."

In doing so, the newspaper failed to acknowledge that it editorialized in favor of the law on August 7, 2007, or provide any change that would explain its new position, offered now in two subsequent opposition editorials.

From the editorial:

Remember these names: Chris Redfern, chairman of the Ohio Democratic Party; state Sen. Tim Grendell, Republican from Geauga County; state Sen. Tom Patton, Republican from Strongsville; and state Rep. Kenny Yuko, Democrat from Richmond Heights.

These area politicians have aided and abetted the gun lobby in putting the bang back in gang.

They did so by supporting legislation two years ago that nullified local gun laws.

Patton was in the House at the time, as was Redfern. Gov. Bob Taft's veto of House Bill 347 was overridden with the help of Grendell, Patton and Yuko; Redfern did not vote to override the veto.

At the time, Cleveland had enacted laws that required, among other things, that handguns be registered; that prohibited the possession of firearms by minors; and that forbade the sale and possession of assault weapons.

All of those laws are in limbo now, unenforced while the city challenges the state law in the courts.

As of Friday, the city has seen 72 homicides this year, 49 of which involved handguns. Last year at this time, there had been 73 homicides, 52 of which involved handguns.

The truth, of which the Plain Dealer has been informed by Buckeye Firearms Association on multiple occasions, is that the gang never had lost its "bang", and no other of these homicides would have been prevented had the city's gun ban remained in effect.

During the fight to pass statewide preemption, Buckeye Firearms Association was able to verify through public records requests that in all of 2006 there was not one single person charged with a violation of Cleveland's assault weapons ban. That's right, not even one.

Our investigation also found that, in 2007 (before HB347 took effect), one person was prosecuted for a violation of Cleveland's bans. But the case never made it to trial because the Grand Jury returned a "no bill," meaning they couldn't even find the enough evidence of a crime for the case to move forward to a trial.

So not only did the City of Cleveland not convict a single person under their so-called assault weapons ban in 2006 or 2007; they never even took one case to trial!

We conducted our investigation after months of calling on the Plain Dealer and other media to ask these questions themselves, and when we were done, we provided the Plain Dealer with the facts, which they have yet to publish.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer history on covering the debate over statewide preemption of local gun control laws is an interesting one indeed.

On August 7, 2007, the Plain Dealer actually editorialized in FAVOR of preemption:

This page continues to look skeptically on concealed carry, but consistency in the form of statewide, uniform standards makes more sense than a confusing patchwork of local contradictions.

Less than four months later, Plain Dealer editors reversed themselves, without noting or explaining the reversal:

By taking away local governments' ability to regulate the sale and possession of guns, the legislature tramples the principle of home rule more egregiously than ever.

When I contacted Plain Dealer Deputy Editorial Director Kevin O'Brien about the discrepancy, he admitted that the same person - Phillip Morris - had written both editorials, and repeatedly attempted to explain that the change of opinion was because "Mr. Morris detected some changes" in the language of the bill.

The problem was, the language in the bill related to preemption - the language which both editorials were specifically directed at - had not changed during the course of those four months. (Perhaps this shouldn't come as a surprise, given that in 2005 Plain Dealer editorial page editor Brent Larkin admitted to me that they don't read legislation before editorializing. Ironically, this admission came during a conversation about another inaccurate Plain Dealer editorial about a different provision in the exact same legislation - HB347.)

Despite being confronted with the facts on the preemption language having been unchanged, O'Brien and the editorial board refused to issue a correction, or any acknowledgement whatsoever that it had reversed itself in editorials just months apart.

Nor did they make such an acknowledgement in the current editorial, which goes on to present an example of a case the editorial board infers would have turned out differently had HB347 not become law:

Together with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, Cleveland police have executed 189 gun-suppression initiatives so far this year, made 604 arrests and seized 124 firearms.

But all that is cold comfort to De'Ajah Campbell, a 22-month-old toddler who was shot in the back Tuesday night after her mother got into an argument with 20-year-old Darrin Harsley.

Harsley, who police say confessed to the shooting, is a convicted felon who just two weeks ago was released on bond after his arrest on a weapons charge.

Back on the street, police say, Harsley had no trouble obtaining a handgun. He was also armed with two other weapons, including an assault rifle. Police are now trying to trace those firearms.

How is a thug like Harsley able to rearm so quickly and easily?

In part because misguided politicians such as Redfern, Grendell, Patton and Yuko seem to think that gun sellers have more rights than gun victims.

The state law must be overturned. It not only violates the state's constitutional cornerstone of home rule, it also keeps cities from using the lever of the law to reduce the number of easy-to-get, cheap guns.

Did you catch that? Even though laws which make it illegal for felons to buy guns or for felons to be in possession of guns or to sell guns to felons (not to mention laws which prevented this perp from carrying the gun concealed, or laws prohibiting murder) failed to protect this child, the geniuses on the Plain Dealer editorial board want you to believe that one more law would have made all the difference.

The newspaper claims statewide preemption "keeps cities from using the lever of the law to reduce the number of easy-to-get, cheap guns." But given the case of Edward Lesure, which we covered (and the Plain Dealer ignored) in 2008, it is highly possible that the city of Cleveland once again failed to use the laws currently in effect to keep Mr. Harsely behind bars where he belongs.

The Lesure case involved a perp committing gun crimes while under several felony disabilities. Despite having pending felony charges, he was charged instead by the City of Cleveland with misdemeanors, nearly all of which were eventually dismissed. You read that right - not only did the city not pursue the sitting duck felony charges for firearm under disability, they dismissed most all the misdemeanor charges from Lesure's assault case. Lesure wound up pleading to only a resisting arrest charge. No domestic violence, no assault, no aggravated menacing, no violation of the Cleveland assault weapons ban, no violation of the safe storage law - all of which the circumstances of his case suggest he could have been prosecuted for.

Col. Jeff Cooper once said that "The media insist that crime is the major concern of the American public today. In this connection they generally push the point that a disarmed society would be a crime-free society. They will not accept the truth that if you take all the guns off the street you still will have a crime problem, whereas if you take the criminals off the street you cannot have a gun problem."

The evidence is in, and it is indisputable. Cleveland's "assault weapons" ban did nothing to prevent crime, it went largely unused as a tool for city prosecutors, and Plain Dealer editors are long past any legitimate claim of being unaware of these facts. As such, the only logical conclusion is that the newspaper is intentionally ignoring the facts in the pursuit of an anti-gun agenda.
